California DMV Appointment: How to Book Your Knowledge or Drive Test

Updated November 4, 2026 · By the DMVWise team

Short answer: You can book a California DMV appointment online through the DMV’s appointment system at dmv.ca.gov, or by calling 1-800-777-0133 during business hours. A behind-the-wheel drive test always needs an appointment, because the DMV does not give drive tests without one. For other office visits, including the knowledge (written) test, the DMV recommends an appointment for faster service. If you take the knowledge test at an office, you must start it before 4:30 p.m.

Which DMV visits need an appointment?

Not every DMV task needs an office visit, and only one needs a booked slot no matter what. Here is how the DMV’s own pages break it down:

What you needAppointment?
Behind-the-wheel drive testRequired. Book online or by phone.
Knowledge test, instruction permit or first license at an officeRecommended for faster service
First-time REAL IDOffice visit required; the DMV tells you to bring your original documents to your REAL ID appointment
License or ID card renewalUsually no office visit. The DMV does not offer counter service for renewals unless your notice says otherwise.
Replacement licenseNo counter service. Use online, a DMV kiosk, a DMV business partner or mail.

The DMV’s Appointments menu also includes a “Get in Line Now” option next to “Schedule Appointment.” The DMV pages we checked do not explain which services it covers, so check it on dmv.ca.gov before you rely on it.

How to book a DMV appointment

  1. Finish your application online first. The DMV encourages you to complete the Driver’s License & ID Card application before your appointment. It says the form takes about 9 minutes on average and times out after 15 minutes. You get a confirmation number by email. Applications are stored for up to one year and are only processed when you visit an office.
  2. Open the appointment system. On dmv.ca.gov, go to Appointments, then Schedule Appointment. The system offers three choices: Field Office Appointment, Drive Test Appointment, and View or cancel an existing appointment.
  3. Pick the right type. Choose a field office appointment for the knowledge test, a permit, a first license or REAL ID. Choose a drive test appointment only for the behind-the-wheel test.
  4. Enter your information and choose a time. The system takes you to a page where you enter your details, then to the scheduler.
  5. Or call. The DMV says you can also schedule a driving test by calling 1-800-777-0133 during business hours.

Booking the behind-the-wheel drive test

Before you book a drive test, you have to meet the DMV’s requirements for your age.

If you’re under 18

  • Be at least 16 years old.
  • Hold an instruction permit from California or another state for at least 6 months (or turn 18) before you schedule the test.
  • Finish driver education and 6 hours of professional driver training.
  • Log 50 hours of supervised practice, including at least 10 at night, with a California-licensed adult 25 or older.

The DMV also says that if you got your permit after age 17½ without driver education and training certificates, you can’t take the drive test until you turn 18. If your permit expired before you reached six months, bring both the expired and the valid permit to your test to get credit for the time. Our guides to learner’s permit rules and permit age cover the timeline.

If you’re 18 or older

You need an instruction permit, which means you have already passed the vision and knowledge tests. The DMV’s adult requirements don’t list a minimum permit holding period. Read the caution about the six-month wait in our adult license guide before you book. If you hold a license from another country, the DMV requires a drive test and an accompanying driver to and from it.

Rescheduling and cancelling

The appointment system has a “View or cancel an existing appointment” option. The DMV pages we checked don’t describe a separate reschedule tool, so the simple path is to cancel and book a new slot, or call 1-800-777-0133.

The DMV can also reschedule your drive test for you. The handbook and the DMV’s drive test fact sheet say the test will be rescheduled if your vehicle doesn’t meet the safety requirements, or if you won’t wear your seat belt. A cracked windshield may postpone it, and the test won’t start until you show proof of insurance.

What if you’re late or miss your appointment?

The DMV does not publish a grace period for late arrivals or a penalty for missed appointments on the pages we checked. Its advice to senior drivers is simply to arrive with enough time and your documents. Plan for that, and keep the knowledge-test cutoff below in mind if your slot is late in the day.

The 4:30 p.m. knowledge test cutoff

Knowledge tests aren’t given at DMV offices after 4:30 p.m., and the DMV says in-office testing must be started before then. Its driver’s license pages also say knowledge tests aren’t given within 30 minutes of an office’s closing time. A morning appointment gives you the most room.

You may not need an office slot for the test itself. The DMV’s December 2023 news release says the online knowledge test can be tried twice, with a third try at an office, and is offered in 35 languages. The DMV says you may still need to visit an office afterward to provide your documents, and that office visits include a photo, a thumbprint and a vision screening. What to bring

Knowledge test or first license

  • Your Social Security number
  • An identity document (original or certified copy)
  • Proof of California residency if you have never had a California license or ID
  • A legal name document if your name doesn’t match your identity document
  • The nonrefundable application fee. As of November 2026, the DMV lists $46 for an original Class C license.
  • Under 18: a driver education certificate (ages 15½ to 17½) and a parent or guardian signature

Our full checklist is in what to bring to the DMV permit test.

Drive test

  • Your instruction permit
  • A California-licensed driver at least 18 (25 for minors), unless you’re already licensed
  • A vehicle that is safe to drive
  • Valid proof of insurance and vehicle registration. For a rental car, your name must be on the contract and it can’t exclude drive tests.

More on scoring and vehicle checks is in our behind-the-wheel test guide.

DMV-backed ways to make your visit faster

The DMV doesn’t publish how far out appointments are booked, and we won’t guess. These steps come straight from its pages:

  • Apply online before you go. The DMV says this saves time at your visit.
  • Skip the office when you can. Renewals, replacements and records are handled online, at a kiosk, with a business partner or by mail.
  • Check wait times before you go. The DMV’s REAL ID page suggests checking wait times as part of preparing.
  • Test online if offered. Taking the knowledge test at home removes the 4:30 p.m. office cutoff from your plans.
  • Prepare your car. A vehicle that fails the pre-drive check means a rescheduled drive test.
